My Landscape of Learning

After two weeks of volunteer teaching in Cusco, Peru I hiked up Machu Picchu. This was my view. This is my inspiration for the landscape of learning.

My Comment to a Controversial Blog Post

I read a blog post this morning that really got me thinking. I read about an educator who used to feel hopeless in the field of education. He became very negative and cynical regarding our education system today. Toward the end of the blog post I was refreshed to read that he persevered and re-instilled hope and faith, both in himself and the field of education. However, there was once particular section of the blog post that I found to be very controversial, and I realized that many educators share the author's same frustration. I decided to put a positive spin on the issue to help remind educators that we need to continue to be resilient by motivating and inspiring our colleagues, future teachers, and our students to be the best that they can possibly be, especially when times are tough! Below is an excerpt from the blog post, " Why I Continue Teaching " As the weight of proposals such as these and standardized testing crushes my innovation, imag...

4 Steps to Learn Anything in 20 Hours

Have you ever wanted to learn a new skill, but felt like you didn't have enough time? Maybe you have been wanting to learn how to play the guitar, make an app, or even build a computer. What if I told you that you could learn a new skill in only 20 hours? According to the author of The First 20 Hours , Josh Kaufman, you can learn anything ... faster than you think! As an educator, I am passionate about helping students become independent, lifelong learners. One of my goals is to help students become more "knowledge- able " by teaching them how to acquire new information and skills on their own. And after watching Josh's TED Talk - The first 20 hours , I want to share this inspiring idea with other teachers and students. In order to learn any skill in 20 hours, Josh offers a four-step process with advice from his own experience. In his TED Talk , Josh demonstrates how he learned how to play the ukulele by following his own learning pr...

You Can CRAM it!

Photo is CC licensed at tofugu.com I recently read a blog post from Richard Byrne titled, Cram - Create, Study, and Share Online Flashcards which really got me fired up! Now don't get me wrong, I really like Richard, and he has shared some amazing resources on his blog, Free Technology for Teachers that I have used with my students and have shared with my PLN. However, this is one technology tool that I just simply do not support. Technology integration should be transformational , not translational . Cram , unfortunately, is an non-example of transformational technology use. In other words, this is an example of what we DON'T want for our students. To further illustrate my point, the following sentence was copied directly from Cram 's website. And I quote: "Flashcards are effective because they are founded on the principles of rote and memorization." Not only are we encouraging this type of lear...
